Here in Japan, autumn feels like a farewell. Goodbye to summer, to vivid colors, to energy. Retreat into cold winter, homes without proper insulation, and the mixture of lights, fried chicken, and strawberry shortcake that is a far, sad cry from real Christmas.
But at home? Fall has always been my favorite season. Autumn is a new beginning back in the U.S.of A. A new school year with a promise of new activities, experiences, and friends – all in a brand new outfit, of course. September breathes excitement, and the first falling leaf is a sign of all the goodness to come: apple cider donuts, pumpkin spice lattes, playing in leaf piles, movie nights under blankets, and colorful, thick scarves. I miss it already.
